No worries, apparently according to my friend the one who runs The Paranormal Paraphernalia Emporium, he told me I would need to hold the lion's paw when I made that wish. Thank goodness for that. I could have carelessly wished for Barnum Flowers alleged werewolf to pay me a visit.
Now I've got a ghostly tale for you during a recent visit to some Australian friends down in Kent. It concerns a stretch of road, the A229 close to Maidstone.
Before I tell you this story, I've heard a very similar one around our neighbourhood. However, let me start with my first tale and the A229 road in Kent.
Firstly, a bit of history. I need to take you back to events in 1974. A man had walked into a police station at Maidstone to report an accident; he claimed he had hit a woman on the road, he said the woman just walked out in front of his moving car.
Now when returning to the scene the police and police dogs failed to find any trace. There was no damage to the driver's car, no sign of impact. The usual appeals launched, in case the victim had somehow wandered off, maybe dazed and confused, but no information was ever forthcoming. The final official outcome to this ghostly tale strikes a chord as in the other case nearer my home.
Another ghost tale I heard about took place in 1992, late at night a young woman ran from the central reservation in front of a car. The driver couldn't avoid hitting her. The driver reported to the police and said she was looking straight at him. Yet pulling his car over he failed to find any sign of her, as was the case when returning with the services to locate the body.
Within the month of this incident, another woman ran out in front of a driver and again police failed to find the body.
There's been quite a number of sightings along the carriageway of a young woman at the roadside at night, the descriptions of her appearance - ghostly looking.
Returning back home I was recalling this ghostly tale and someone mentioned about a lonely stretch of road over the tops to Oakworth. This was at a time when mobile phones were not as commonplace and a time not fraught with the dangers of getting into a stranger's car. Anyway, a driver came across on a narrow lane a young woman dressed in an old style nightdress, clearly in distress as well as being out in atrocious weather.
In an attempt to get her to safety the driver offered the young woman a lift to the local inn where he would call for some help.
The young woman very much shaken sobbing and distressed accepted the help and sat in the passenger's seat as the driver drove down the lane.
As the driver drove down the lane towards a section where the lane straightened out, to his surprise the young woman just vanished, completely right before his eyes.
It seems that as before, like the tale in Maidstone, similar reports surfaced about a distressed young woman in the country lanes and three of these reports claim she vanished right in front of the driver's eyes when they had offered her a lift to seek help.
The official line in all these cases, are you ready for this, these reports are merely in the shaken driver's imagination! Case Closed!
